The Beekeepers Financial Assistance Program was offered in 2014 and 2015 to help Ontario beekeepers cope with bee losses. There was no cost to participate. The Beekeepers Financial Assistance Program is now closed to new applications.
Current participants had until November 20, 2015 to submit a proof of loss form for in-season losses. To date, the program has paid out more than $4 million.
Coverage for Ontario bee colonies is now available through the
Production Insurance bee mortality plan.
How it worked
The program was designed to cover the loss of up to 160 per cent of a beekeeper's registered active hives. If all hives were lost over the winter, they could be replaced and still be covered for in-season losses. If more than 40 per cent of registered hives were lost, a payment was made on the difference.
There were two coverage periods:
- Overwinter (November 1 to April 30)
- In-season (May 1 to October 31)
The deadline to apply for both was
January 30, 2015.
