Government protects pork sector with new Eurasian wild boar transition initiative

November 1, 2021

The federal and provincial governments have announced an initiative that will help farmers of Eurasian wild boar transition out of the production of these animals. Farm escapes of Eurasian wild boar amplify the population of wild pigs in the province. Wild pigs can damage crops and the natural environment, while also facilitating the transmission of African Swine Fever or other foreign animal diseases to pork operations in Ontario. The Eurasian Wild Boar Transition Assistance Initiative will provide eligible farmers with financial support to shift to other forms of production, such as heritage breeds of swine and other livestock or crop production.

For eligibility requirements and more information about this initiative, please read the Initiative Guidelines.

Applications will be accepted through January 14, 2022.
