Throughout the province, corn and soybean yields have been strong for the 2024 program year.
Based on yields reported to Agricorp by Production Insurance participants as of December 31, 2024, the average farm yield for corn is about 204 bushels per acre, which is 10% higher than the 10‑year average of 186 bushels per acre. The average farm yield for soybeans is about 53 bushels per acre, which is 8% higher than the 10‑year average of 49 bushels per acre.
While many Ontario farmers experienced favourable planting and growing conditions in 2024, excess rain during the planting season led to poor crop conditions in some areas. Agricorp was there to help by extending some Production Insurance planting deadlines and paying $75 million in Production Insurance claims to date.

How do higher yields affect program coverage?
Higher yields can lead to higher Production Insurance coverage in future years, when farmers may need it.
Because Production Insurance coverage is based on a farmer's individual yield history, an above‑average yield raises their average farm yield (AFY). The higher the AFY, the higher the level of production Agricorp guarantees.
Higher yields help keep premium rates stable and can lead to individual premium discounts. Premium rates are set annually and are based on commodity prices and past claims.
How do lower yields affect program coverage?
One bad production year doesn't significantly impact a farmer's 10-year AFY. Unusually low (or high) yields are buffered to stabilize the AFY and lessen the impact of extreme yields. A stable AFY means stable and dependable coverage.
