Corn and soybean maps show millions of acres protected by Production Insurance

July 28, 2023

Thousands of Ontario farmers rely on Production Insurance each year to protect their investments, with more than 5.25 million acres of crops covered in 2023. These farmers can take comfort in knowing these valuable acres are covered against risks beyond their control.

Farmers have just completed spring-seeded acreage reporting. More farmers than ever took advantage of the ease and speed of online reporting, with nearly half of farmers reporting their acreage online.

About 1.63 million acres of corn and 2.08 million acres of soybeans are covered by Production Insurance in 2023. The maps below show corn and soybeans acres in counties across Ontario covered by Production Insurance in 2023.

How Production Insurance can help

During the summer, Agricorp knows farmers across Ontario are watching the weather, especially for rain. Getting the right amount of rain at the right time is never guaranteed, and too little or too much rain can be harmful to farm businesses.

Production Insurance is designed to cover yield reductions and production losses caused by factors beyond a farmer's control, including adverse weather, disease, pests, wildlife, or other uncontrollable natural perils. Coverage is available for over 100 commodities.

For yield-based commodities, farmers are covered if an insured peril affects planting or production. For other commodities, they are covered for things like death or damage to fruit trees or grape vines, too much or too little rainfall, or failure of a crop to establish.

As farmers monitor their crops over the coming months, they should contact Agricorp if they notice any new or additional damage.
