Forage rainfall plan helps farmers – largest excess rainfall payment to date

August 28, 2019  | Updated: September 19, 2019

Ontario farmers enrolled in the excess rainfall option under the Production Insurance plan for forage rainfall received $3.83 million in payments in 2019, the largest payment to date for this coverage option.

Agricorp delivers the forage rainfall plan on behalf of government to help manage the impact of forage shortages and quality reductions due to rainfall variability. Over the spring and early summer of 2019, excess rainfall caused harvest delays and quality concerns in some areas of the province.

The maps below outline rainfall in the province for the months of May, June and July.

How the forage rainfall plan works

The forage rainfall plan offers coverage for both excess and insufficient rainfall. The plan assumes a relationship between rainfall and yield and compensates farmers for too much or too little rainfall, depending on the coverage they selected.

Payments for the insufficient rainfall coverage option will be made in September.
