Concerned about wet weather? Business risk management programs can help

April 21, 2026

This spring, farmers may have concerns about how wet weather might affect their crops. The programs Agricorp delivers are designed specifically to help farmers in situations like these.

It's not too late for Ontario farmers to get coverage for their vegetable, grain, oilseed, forage, fruit, and specialty crops. Understanding how coverage works can help farmers make the best decisions for their farm businesses.

Production Insurance

Production Insurance includes built-in benefits that help Ontario farmers if they are unable to plant or have to replant crops due to excessive rainfall. To qualify, farmers need to have insured all of their crops.

  • Unseeded acreage coverage: Helps offset financial burdens such as fixed costs and land maintenance.
  • Replant coverage: Helps cover the cost of replanting some or all of damaged acres. It reflects the average cost of seed, tillage, and planting.

AgriStability

For farmers concerned about future large income declines due to excessive rainfall, AgriStability can help. If a farmer's margin falls below 70% of their recent average, AgriStability helps to offset the difference.

Farmers in AgriStability who need cash flow sooner can apply for a 2026 AgriStability interim payment, which is an advance on a portion of their estimated final payment.

To sign up for 2026 AgriStability, submit a New Participant Form by April 30.

SDRM: Edible Horticulture

The Self‑Directed Risk Management (SDRM) program helps edible horticulture producers manage risks beyond their control.

Producers put a portion of their sales into an SDRM account and the deposit is matched by the Ontario government. Farmers can withdraw funds from their SDRM accounts at any time.

AgriInvest

AgriInvest is a savings account that farmers can use to either cover small income losses or support other investments.

Each year, farmers can deposit up to 1% of their allowable net sales and get a matching government contribution. There is no application form, and farmers can withdraw the money at any time.

AgriInvest is delivered by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
